The Bowl Games (Quick Picks).

Here is a quick look at ALL the Non-BCS Bowls coming up this year. I love this time of year:

New Mexico Bowl: Wyoming vs. Fresno State– The Cowboys played 2 BCS Bowl teams this year, and Fresno State is always ready for a fight.
Pick: Fresno State 31 Wyoming 17

St. Petersburg Bowl: Rutgers vs. UCF– Apparently this is really a bowl, and it is NOT played in Russia. Rutgers is a tough team that likes to run. UCF is good at stopping it. Should be a good game, if you remember to tune in.
Pick: Rutgers 24 UCF 20

R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: Southern Miss vs. Middle Tennessee State– Another lower tier bowl with a great name. At least these teams get to go to New Orleans.
Pick: Southern Miss 30 Middle Tennessee State 20

MAACO Las Vegas Bowl: BYU vs. Oregon State– Good matchup. This easily could have been a BCS bowl matchup early in the season. Don’t laugh, OSU was almost there and BYU beat Oklahoma early in the season. Look for this one to go down to the wire.
Pick: Oregon State 45 BYU 35

Poinsettia Bowl: Utah vs. California– This is one of the “prettiest” bowl games. Just don’t eat it. Cal at one point this season was ranked # 6 in the nation, but has fallen on hard times. Utah was last seasons darling, and will look to upset another big conference team.
Pick: Utah 35 California 31

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl: SMU vs. Nevada– This is SMU’s first bowl game since 1984, I was 5. Nevada has been a pretty good team this year, challenging Boise State for the WAC title. Don’t expect much defense.
Pick: Nevada 38 SMU 29

Emerald Bowl: Boston College vs. USC– I wonder if the crowd will bother USC Quarterback Matt Barkley? Probably not, he’s a gamer. The Trojans probably didn’t think they would be in San Francisco for a pre-2010 bowl game. Boston College is probably VERY happy with their showdown with USC. This could be a very good and physical game.
Pick: USC 27 Boston College 17

Meineke Car Care Bowl: North Carolina vs. Pitt– Every participant in this bowl receives a free oil change and brake job as well as a nice trophy. You can’t beat that. Pitt is coming off a heart breaking loss to Cincy, and North Carolina is looking to get a win against a VERY good Pitt squad. Another good matchup.
Pick: Pitt 24 North Caroina 23

Little Caesars Pizza Bowl: Ohio vs. Marshall– I wonder what they give out for the gift baskets to players? I would take the $5 pizzas they sell so well. I have a feeling this one will be one of the lowest watched games of the bowl season, overshadowed by the other games on the 26th.
Pick: Ohio 27 Marshall 23

Music City Bowl: Kentucky vs. Clemson– Both teams get to spend time in one of the best cities in the nation. That isn’t bad. Clemson came close to playing in a BCS game while Kentucky got some pub this year for knocking out Tim Tebow. Clemson wins big.
Pick: Clemson 40 Kentucky 17

Independence Bowl: Texas A&M vs. Georgia– Not a bad matchup at all. A&M brings in one of the best offenses in the nation and Georgia will bring its SEC defense, not a good one but they are used to playing defense sometimes. Georgia will put points up as well, should be a fun one to watch.
Pick: Georgia 37 Texas A&M 35

Champs Sports Bowl: Miami vs. Wisconsin– Early in the season, Miami was being praised and deemed “back in the national title hunt”. Well, that didn’t last too much longer, but it was still fun. Wisconsin surprised some, and kept itself in the Big 10 title hunt. This matchup will be another tough one.
Pick: Miami 28 Wisconsin 20

EagleBank Bowl: Temple vs. Army/UCLA– They could also call this the “UCLA has fallen on hard times bowl”. If Army beats Navy this weekend, then Army will play in this bowl. If not, it will be UCLA. I am in favor of Army playing so we can see that GIANT 6’10” wide receiver on national t.v. That is a good reason to watch this one.
Pick: UCLA 34 Temple 20 or Temple 27 Army 13

Pacific Life Holiday Bowl: Nebraska vs. Arizona– I think A LOT of people were VERY surprised at how well Nebraska played in the Big 12 championship. Well, their defense anyway. Ndamukong Suh might have played himself into the Heisman ceremony. He was dominant. Mike Stoops beat USC for the first time and brings a confident team into San Diego. If Nebraska can put up some points, look out.
Pick: Arizona 17 Nebraska 13

Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl: Idaho vs. Bowling Green– Idaho has had an amazing run this year. A once forgotten team, they have played themselves into a late December Bowl game. Bowling Green is lead by All American Freddie Barnes. Should be a shooout.
Pick: Bowling Green 41 Idaho 25

Texas Bowl: Missouri vs. Navy– Every Bowl should do this, ONE name. Of course, Texas is about the only thing who can pull off the one name thing. TEXAS. sounds good. Navy is a tough team that will have its hands full with the strong Missouri offense. Danario Alexander could cause major problems for the Navy defense. Of course, i thought the same thing when they played Golden Tait and Notre Dame.
Pick: Missouri 34 Navy 21

Armed Forces Bowl: Air Force vs. Houston– Air Force is a branch of the armed forces, so that is always good in this bowl game. The Falcons played TCU tough this year, while Houston is looking to finish on a positive note while having some disappointing outcomes recently. Might be a long day for the Air Force D.
Pick: Houston 48 Air Force 23

Brut Sun Bowl: Stanford vs. Oklahoma– Is this one sponsored by Brut? As in Brut, Brut? The stuff EVERY 6th grade boy buys to impress the ladies at school dances? Classic. Best sponsor of the year. Everyone has heard of Stanford’s Toby Gerhart, including the tough OU defense. Oklahoma is looking to finish on a positive note after a HUGELY disappointing season. Should be a great game, even though Stanford QB is Andrew Luck will NOT be playing. Gerhart might get 40+ carries. Pastor D likes the Sooners, so do I…to win, thats it.
Pick: Oklahoma 33 Stanford 31

Insight Bowl: Minnesota vs. Iowa State– Ok seriously, I really had no idea that Iowa State was bowl eligible. I do remember them beating Nebraska, but that was their only win..right?
Pick: Minnesota 23 Iowa State 17

Chick-fil-A Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee– I would want to play in this bowl. Imagine all the Chik Fil A you could eat during the lead up to the game. Yum. This should be a low scoring affair with somewhat sloppy play. Of course, saying that, it will be a shootout.
Pick: Virginia Tech 20 Tennessee 15

Outback Bowl: Northwestern vs. Auburn– The first 2010 Bowl Game could put up a lot of points. Northwestern has shown signs of life this year, including a win over BCS team Iowa. Auburn played Alabama VERY close and almost pulled off the upset. Look for fireworks as both offenses have time to tweak it up.
Pick: Auburn 37 Northwestern 27

Capital One Bowl: LSU vs. Penn State– This will be one of the better and most competitive bowl games of the year. LSU has played well all season, and came within a few plays of beating both Alabama and Florida. Penn State is a talented and deep team, looking to go out with a win. Should be a great one.
Pick: LSU 23 Penn State 21

Gator Bowl: Florida State vs. West Virginia– “The Bobby Bowden is leaving Bowl”. He wanted it, and he got it. The Seminoles will try and send Bowden out in style with a win over a very athletic Mountaineer team. Things might not go as planned.
Pick: West Virginia 37 Florida State 18

AutoZone Liberty Bowl: East Carolina vs. Arkansas– I am all for Liberty, which is why I am all for this game. Arkansas has looked really good this season and really bad. They are hoping to at least look good in this one. Skip Holtz is a good coach who should have the Pirates ready for this game.
Pick: Arkansas 30 East Carolina 17

International Bowl: South Florida vs. Northern Illinois– Another good name for a bowl. It could be in Mexico City, Paris, Tokyo or Bangkok. Unfortunately, they choose to play it in Toronto. Look for South Florida to win, they have good athletes and I really don’t know much about Northern Illinois.
Pick: South Florida 38 Northern Illinois 20

AT&T Cotton Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss– This is always one of my favorite bowl games. Oklahoma State lost their chance to play in a BCS bowl, and will be ready to make up for that. Ole Miss had high expectations this year, but has found themselves in the Cotton Bowl for the 2nd straight year. Should be a fun one to watch. Hope you like offense.
Pick: Oklahoma State 41 Ole Miss 36

Papajohns.com Bowl: Uconn vs. South Carolina– Another pizza bowl. Uconn is a team that wants to run the ball. South Carolina is a team that wants and can stop the run. Could be a long day for Husky fans.
Pick: South Carolina 27 UCONN 17

Valero Alamo Bowl: Michigan State vs. Texas Tech– Honestly I have not seen Michigan State play this year, just highlights of their near upset of Iowa. Texas Tech is always worth tuning into see with their prolific pass offense. If the Red Raiders can settle on one QB, look for them to be victorious.
Pick: Texas Tech 39 Michigan State 30

GMAC Bowl: Central Michigan vs. Troy– Doesn’t Central Michigan ALWAYS play in this bowl? I think so. Troy has been a solid performer for some time and hopes to knock off the high powered Chippewas.
Pick: Central Michigan 35 Troy 17

Well, I say you did a good job picking the games. Many could go either way. Just remember that Clemson got killed by an SEC team (South Carolina) that is about the same level as Kentucky. I am not saying Clemson won’t win, I just think it will be MUCH closer. Kentucky beat us at home, of course our offense was on vacation that week.
