Week 5.

It is hard to believe that September is almost over. We are getting into Fall with cooler temperatures and bigger games. Last week I was not able to watch any football, I was on vacation and of course couldn’t convince “Mrs. JW Sports Blog” to let me watch ANY games. Turns out, I missed some good ones and missed out on my picks. Haha, that sounds about right. This week is another solid week of football. Here are the games I am excited about:

1. North Carolina @ Miami- Coach Butch Davis and his Tarheels take on his former team in Miami. Both teams are 2-1 on the young season and seem to be heading in the right direction. Last week, Carolina was really close at staying undefeated but turnovers and penalties were too much to overcome and Virginia Tech stole victory from the Heels. Miami is coming off their best showing of the season beating Texas A&M 41-23. The Hurricanes defense has been the strength of the team in the early part of the season. They are ranked #26 in total D and #17 against the run. North Carolina features all-purpose star Brandon Tate. Tate leads the nation in all purpose yards and RB Greg Little has been solid on the ground. The key in this game is how well Miami’s young offense plays. Whichever team has the least turnovers will have the advantage in this game.
My Pick: Miami 31 North Carolina 20

2. TCU @ Oklahoma- On paper, this game looks like it will be a BLOWOUT. Oklahoma has been impressive in all of their wins this season racking up nearly 55 points per game while only giving up 14. TCU isn’t coming in to Norman as an unkown, the Horned Frogs are the #1 defense in the country and #1 in turnover margin. The Sooners had an extra week to get ready for the TCU D which will help them figure out the 4-2-5 scheme the Horned Frogs run. If the Frogs can get pressure on Sam Bradford and control the clock on offense, TCU could be in this game in the 4th. And remember, the Horned Frogs beat the Sooners 17-10 in the 2005 season opener. Don’t think the Sooners have forgotten.
My Pick: Oklahoma 35 TCU 20

3. Alabama @ Georgia- I know this will make some of my readers mad, but the SEC is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it is still an elite conference, but the Big 12 could easily give the SEC a run for its money this year. The defenses are good, the offenses are bad. Rant over. Now, this match-up will surely be a good one. Alabama is playing well this year with a core of young talent and experienced Sr. quarterback John Parker Wilson. Georgia is lead by QB Matt Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno who is an early favorite for this year’s Heisman Trophy. Just like most big SEC games in primetime, this one will be physical and close. Georgia hasn’t looked dominate at times this season, which worries a lot of Bulldog fans. Alabama is young, and with young teams you can and will see some inconsistent play and decision making. The Crimson Tide D will hold Moreno in check, while flustering Matt Stafford with the blitz. That will put pressure on the Bama offense to put points on the board.
My Pick: Alabama 24 Georgia 23

Obscure Pick of the Week: New Mexico 35 New Mexico State 17- this is the 99th meeting between the teams. Be sure to tune in!

Upset Pick of the Week: Ole Miss 38 Florida 31- I am just throwing this out there…not sure the Rebels can score 38 on the Gators, but what the heck?
