Week 2.

Well, the opening week of the 2008 college football season was great! We had upsets, blowouts and good games between teams who are still trying to find out who they are. In just the second week of games, we already have a new #1…USC, who took over the spot from Georgia. The second week of the season gets underway tonight when most of the college football world will be tuning into an interesting SEC matchup; South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt. There are also some good games coming up on Saturday, and here are a few that you should pay attention too:

1. Ole Miss vs. Wake Forest- Wake Forest opened their season with a strong win over Baylor in Waco. The Demon Deacons are #20 in both the AP and Coaches Poll this week, and seem to be the “class” of the ACC so far this year. QB Riley Skinner began his season with a great game against Baylor going 27 of 36 for 220 yards and 3 tds. Skinner is a proven leader…how is goes, so go the Deacons. Ole Miss seems to be a “sexy” pick in the SEC this year. Jevan Snead (Texas transfer) has been called “the best Rebel quarterback since Eli Manning”. Is that saying much? Maybe not, but Snead has given Rebel fans a reason to be excited. He led the offense to 438 total yards in their Week 1 win over Memphis. These two teams have only met once in their history, a meeting Wake Forest won in 2006. Don’t expect to see a lot of defense in this one..
My Pick: Wake Forest 38 Ole Miss 31

2. Miami @ Florida- This matchup sounds A LOT better on paper..or screen…than it actually is. Miami is in the process of rebuilding its program from the ground up. Randy Shannon seems to be a perfect fit for the Hurricanes. While Miami brings youth and inexperience into the game, Florida brings Tim Tebow. You know, last years Heisman Trophy winner. Tebow and the Gators seem to be back at 100% with the return of WR Percy Harvin this week. #5 Florida is the favorite going into the game, but there is one stat you might want to take a look at. Stay with me here: NO Florida coach has beaten Miami in his first meeting with the Canes when the game is in Gainesville. Did you get that? Here is another one: Urban Meyer has NEVER lost a non conference home game in his CAREER. Hmm..something will have to give. While things seem to be looking up in Coral Gables, this game will definitely show us all where the Canes are. Look for a close game early with the Gators pulling away at the end.
My Pick: Florida 34 Miami 21

Highlights from Week 1: Colt McCoy against FAU; Texas A&M losing to Arkansas State; Michigan losing to Utah (I called this one); Virginia Tech losing to ECU; Juice Williams against Mizzou
